Those old cans are the part people forget to ask about. Many are deep metal housings built around a hot halogen lamp. They were never made to touch insulation, and they leak air.
Eight feet is also the harder height to light well. The cans move closer together and further off the wall. Get either one wrong and you see scallops and glare instead of even light.

Wafer lights in thin ceilings
A wafer is about an inch thick and clips in from below. It fits soffits and joist bays where a full housing never will.
Spacing tuned for eight feet
Lower ceilings want cans closer together and set back off the wall. We measure the room instead of copying a chart.
Patched and textured to match
Old fixture holes get filled, textured to match what is there, and left ready for paint.
Dimmer swapped out
A dimmer made for bulbs makes LEDs flicker and buzz. Yours gets one rated for LED, so the low end stays smooth.

Nine feet only took over in new plans after that. A lower ceiling puts the light nearer your eyes, so glare and setback matter more than they do in a new build.
An unsealed can is a hole in your ceiling
A can that is not air sealed pulls three to five times more air while the light is on. The hot housing acts like a chimney into a 150 degree attic.
Unrated housings need clear space around them
Older cans were built to sit three inches away from insulation. If someone has blown insulation over yours since, that is worth fixing while we are up there.
Downstairs rooms have no attic above
In a two story house the first floor ceiling is the upstairs floor. There are only joist bays up there, so those rooms get thin wafer fixtures.
