
Most kitchens have one lighting layer. A grid of cans in the ceiling, on one switch, and that is the whole plan.
It works, in the way a work light works. The room is lit. Nothing feels finished, and you still chop in your own shadow.
A layered kitchen splits the work three ways. Ambient light fills the room and task light lands where your hands are. Accent light adds the depth you notice without knowing why.
Ambient light fills the room
This is the base layer. It is the light you turn on when you walk in with an armful of groceries.
In most homes it comes from recessed cans. A common target for a kitchen is about 70 to 80 lumens per square foot across the room.

East Valley kitchens have a second problem. The sun does half the work at two in the afternoon and none of it at seven.
So the ambient layer has to hold the room on its own after dark. Dark cabinets and deep counters eat light, and a layout drawn for white cabinets comes up short.
Task light goes where your hands are
Here is the thing a ceiling grid cannot fix. When the light is behind you, your body blocks it. You work in your own shadow.
Task light solves that by sitting in front of you and close to the work.
Under the upper cabinets
This is the workhorse. A strip runs under the cabinet, right above the counter, lighting the cutting board instead of your back.
A useful range is roughly 250 to 400 lumens per foot of counter. Set the strip toward the front edge of the cabinet so the light lands on the counter, not on the backsplash.
We wire this as under-cabinet lighting on its own switch, with the driver tucked where a hand can reach it.
Sink, range, and island
The sink usually needs its own light above it. So does the range if the hood is dim or has no light of its own.
An island wants light that lands on the counter surface. Pendants or cans both work. What matters is that nobody stands in a shadow while prepping.
Accent light adds the depth
Accent is the layer people skip. It is also the one that separates a finished kitchen from a lit one.
Toe kick strips under the island. A glow inside glass front cabinets. A soft wash on open shelving or the hood.
None of it helps you cook. All of it changes how the room feels at night, when you drop the other layers low.
Keep accent light dim by design. If it competes with the task layer, it stops reading as accent.
The mistakes we get called to fix
The most common one is a can light placed too close to the upper cabinets. It lights the cabinet doors and leaves the counter in shade.
Cans over a work zone belong closer to the front edge of the counter. That is where you stand, and that is where the light has to land.
The second is under-cabinet strips mounted at the back wall. The backsplash glows, the cutting board does not.
The third is one switch for everything. A kitchen on a single circuit has one setting, and it is the bright one.
Pendants do two jobs
Island pendants are the piece everyone picks first. They are both the jewelry and a working light.
Hang them roughly 30 to 36 inches above the counter. Higher and the light spreads thin. Lower and they block the view across the island.
Watch the bulb. An open shade at eye level with a bare bulb glares every time you sit down at the island.
One color across every layer
Mixed color temperature is the fastest way to make a nice kitchen look cheap. Your eye catches it right away.
We run 3000K through the whole room in most homes. It is warm enough to feel like home and clean enough to cook under.
Ask for a color rendering index of 90 or better on the task layer. Under 80 CRI, raw chicken and a ripe tomato both read wrong.
Every layer needs its own switch
Layers only pay off when you can run them apart. That means three switches at a minimum, and all of them on dimmers.
Morning is cans up high and under-cabinet on. Dinner prep adds the pendants. Late night is toe kicks alone at ten percent.
Same fixtures, four different rooms. The switching is what buys you that, and it costs almost nothing while the walls are open.
