
Picture a brand new great room. The lights are on. The room still feels gray.
Nothing was broken. The cans were spaced well. There just was not enough light in the room for its size.
That is a math problem, and the math is easy. You just need the right unit.
Lumens measure light. Watts measure power.
A watt is energy used. A lumen is light made. For 100 years those two tracked each other, so we all shopped by watts.
LEDs ended that. A 60 watt bulb gave you about 800 lumens. An LED makes the same 800 lumens on about 9 watts.
So the bulb box now leads with lumens. The Lighting Facts label on the package lists brightness in lumens first, then the yearly cost, the life, and the color of the light.
Shop by watts and you are guessing. Shop by lumens and you are measuring.
Every room has a target in lumens per square foot
Lighting people call one lumen per square foot a foot-candle. Same thing, older name.
There are published targets for each room type. They come from the IES, the standards group for lighting. Multiply the range by your square feet to get your goal.
Kitchens want the most
General kitchen light runs 20 to 50 lumens per square foot. Over a counter where you actually cut and cook, the target jumps to 50 to 100.
That gap is why a kitchen needs more than one layer. Ceiling cans carry the room. Something closer carries the counter.
Living and dining rooms sit low
Both land around 10 to 20 lumens per square foot. These are rooms for sitting, not for reading fine print.
Go much past 20 and a living room starts to feel like a lobby. Put it on a dimmer and you get both.
Bedrooms and baths depend on the job
A bedroom you only sleep in is happy near the low end. One with a makeup counter or a reading chair needs 20 to 50 in those spots.
Baths work the same way. The room can sit near 20 to 30, but a vanity wants 70 or more so you can see your own face.
Halls, garages, and shops
Hallways need very little, just 5 to 10 per square foot. A garage you park in is similar.
A garage you work in is a different room. Workshop targets run 20 to 75, and most East Valley garages start nowhere near that.
Four things move the number
Square footage gets you a starting point. Then the room itself argues with you.
Ceiling height
Light spreads out as it falls. The higher the ceiling, the less of it lands on the floor.
From an 8 foot baseline, add about 10% at 9 feet and 20% at 10 feet. A 12 foot ceiling wants roughly 40% more, and a 16 foot great room can need close to double.
Queen Creek builders love a tall ceiling. Many dim rooms are simply tall rooms lit like short ones.
Wall and floor color
A light ceiling bounces back 70% to 90% of what hits it. Walls in medium to light colors return 30% to 70%. A dark wood floor may give back only 10%.
So a room in bone white and a room in deep green need different fixtures. Plan on 10% to 20% more light for the dark room.
Dimmers
A dimmer only takes light away. It never adds any.
So size the room for its brightest use, then dial it down. That is backwards from how most people shop, and it is the whole reason dimmed rooms feel right and dim rooms do not.

Who uses the room
Eyes need more light as they age. Add 10% to 20% for a room an older parent uses daily.
A worked example, room by room
Take a real living room. Call it 14 by 16 feet, so 224 square feet, with a 10 foot ceiling and warm gray walls.
Start in the middle of the living room range, 15 lumens per square foot. That is 224 times 15, or 3,360 lumens.
The ceiling is 10 feet, so add 20%. Now you need about 4,030 lumens.
The walls are on the darker side of medium, so add another 15%. Call it 4,600 lumens for the room.
Now split that up. Six cans at 700 lumens each gets you 4,200. A pair of table lamps covers the rest and gives the room a second layer.
Run the same math on a 12 by 12 kitchen. That is 144 square feet, and at 35 lumens per square foot you need about 5,040 lumens of general light before you add a single thing over the island.
Total lumens is not the same as good light
You can hit 4,600 lumens with one huge fixture in the middle of the ceiling. It will still look bad.
The number tells you how much light the room needs. Spacing tells you where to put it, and that is a separate plan. We walk through it in our guide to can light spacing.

Two mistakes we get called to fix
The first is one big number in one place. A 5,000 lumen fixture in a living room reads as glare, not brightness.
The second is mixed color. Two cans at 3000K next to one at 4000K looks like a mistake even to people who have never heard of Kelvin.
Both cost more to undo than to plan. Ceilings are the worst place in a house to change your mind.
